What to look for in a newborn photographer

When I deliver photos to parents in the weeks after their session, they are always amazed at how much their baby has already changed, they often cry at their photos, remembering how tiny they were. The days go in such a haze of feeds, washing and nappy changes that having the reminder of just how precious your baby is can be overwhelming.

Having a baby is the most amazing time in your life, you have grown this little human and the days will go so fast you will soon forget what they looked like in those first few weeks. Choosing a photographer can be really hard, there are so many around, it’s hard to narrow it down. Here are some tips for you when making that important decision:

  1. It’s best to look for someone with experience handling newborns, someone who looks after the safety of your baby throughout the session, this includes someone who is vaccinated against whooping cough as well as the flu.

  2. Have a look through the prospective photographers website gallery and social media pages, if their style appeals to you then this is your photographer - you will cherish your photos forever knowing that you went for someone’s style you loved.

  3. You must also ask yourself “do I really just want the digitals?”. Our world is so full of technology that is so fast to advance, a USB is not going to work in computers in the future, but those photos hanging on your wall will last your lifetime and beyond. Photos are just as precious as your new baby, they have a place on your walls, not on a USB in your drawer that you never get printed.

  4. Does your photographer offer packages? Packages seem daunting to people used to just getting digital files, but they really aren’t. Your photographer cares about you, your photos and how they look on your walls, so packages are the perfect way for you to have professional photographs, from the time they are taken with the camera right through to them hanging on your wall. It’s so important to a child’s emotional wellbeing to grow up in a home where they are acknowledged as being loved, seeing their photos on the wall shows a child their place is in this home and they are loved. Plus the upside is that you don’t need to find somewhere to print your photos while you have a newborn, your photographer will take care of all the hard stuff, making it super easy for you!

  5. Find someone who you trust. It can be difficult when looking for a photographer to see who is trustworthy as most communication is written. Have a look at reviews, look at their gallery and how relaxed their clients look in their photos, ask for the photographers number and call them to get a better feel for their nature, if you feel uneasy about any part of the photographers work, poses, communication, then it’s best to look for another.

  6. Lastly, does your photographer seem friendly, or are you just another number? You need to find someone who makes you feel comfortable, and who will care about you and your family. Having photos taken can make you feel nervous, but it doesn’t need to be like that, find someone you really click with, don’t book the first person you talk to or the cheapest, look around and see who you really feel at ease with.

I hope this helps you in booking someone you trust and who’s style you love. I wish you the best with your pregnancy, and your new journey into parenthood!

Belly to Baby Sessions!

Are you thinking about a maternity session to compliment your newborn photos? Look at these gorgeous Mums-to-be (and Dads!) who have all had their beautiful baby bump captured in their Belly to Baby Session! Stunning! Basically all of these dresses are available for you to wear free of charge!

Babies Babies Babies!

Oh my goodness I have had the most gorgeous babies in the studio and have not blogged anything for so long! So here is a snapshot of some of the babes I’ve been lucky enough to photograph and cuddle recently!

Milk Bath Maternity

I've had this vision for quite some time to do a milk bath session, and my gorgeous client was so excited to do this as well, so once her bump was ready at 34 weeks, we did it! I bought the lace dress specifically for this, (so it is available to use in your very own session), the softness of the lace paired with the milk bath and beautiful flowers and soft greens just made the whole session!

The newborn haze

As a photographer I get to meet new parents all the time, and I photograph this gorgeous new little bundle so that the tiny window of time that is the newborn stage is captured and can be looked back on forever.

When I visit the new parents to deliver their prints, they open the door and sometimes they are fully dressed and feeling amazing. Other times, the door is opened and in front of me is a half dressed parent, who hasn't slept for the last couple of weeks, on the verge of tears because they are just so exhausted, and that is totally OK. It is OK to be exhausted, it's OK to feel like you just want to cry because being a parent is hard!

Some days and weeks are way harder than you ever imagined, but one day when this newborn stage is long forgotten, you suddenly wake up and they are 9, 6 and 4, and your brain looks at the wall with your newborn prints and you think, "Wow, they were so tiny, where did that time go?" Those early days are such a haze so your newborn photos are your reminder of just how small they were, how amazing you were to create this tiny human, and how far you have come. You are grateful that the memories of their early days are on your wall for you to see.

Parenting always has it's challenges, but when your youngest looks at you and says "Mummy, I love you to outer space, even ALL the way to Queensland" (4yr olds don't have a great concept of distance but you get that he means a lot!), the early days that were hard, and you never thought you would see the light at the end of the tunnel ever again are long forgotten.

I have written all of this, because today I saw a Mum unshowered and completely exhausted (and I know there are plenty more out there feeling the same), who is having a tough time, hasn't slept and can't even get to the shower, and I want to say to you, remember that you are amazing, there will be a time where you will look back and think "Gosh those days were so hard but looks at us now!" and I am thankful that I have been the Photographer to give you those precious sweet memories of just how small your newborn was, so when the haze is gone and the sleep has returned, you can look at the wall and smile.

Love to all the Mum's on International Women's Day xx

Professionally Printed Photos

Did you know? I print your photos for you and I deliver them to your door! Today I had some very excited families as I delivered their print orders. Part of my service to you, is not only to take your family portraits, but to make sure that you get the best quality print to put on your wall! They come ready to frame too, so I make it as easy as I can for you! Don't let a USB sit in the drawer doing nothing, get those prints of your gorgeous family up for everyone to see. It also gives your children a sense of belonging, they can see themselves on the wall, and know that they are a special part of your family. My children have always loved seeing their photos up! Thanks to my 8yr old for the phone pic!

Rainbow Baby Canberra

This gorgeous little girl is a Rainbow Baby. For those of you who don't know, a Rainbow Baby is a child born after the loss of a baby through miscarriage, stillbirth or as an infant. A beautiful Rainbow appears after the storm, and this little one's family have been through so much, and to photograph her in this symbolic way was my absolute honour.

I love when clients come back for new additions!

I photographed this beautiful family not long after I started my photography business and it was so lovely to see them again for their next addition to their family with Baby M! At 2 weeks old she was just so gorgeous and have a look at that hair - we definitely found her perfect colour with the green, but Oh My, look at the "beary" cute pink setup!

Baby P - she did not win the sleep battle!!

This gorgeous girl was just over 4 weeks old for her session, and whilst that's a little older than I normally would photograph for a newborn portrait session, I used all of my baby whispering skills on her and she did not win the sleep battle! Her beautiful family drove from Cooma to Canberra to have her photographed and I can't wait to show them all of their photos!

Canberra Maternity Photography

I had the MOST gorgeous Mums-To-Be in studio a couple of weeks ago and we had Sarah Tahir from Makeup By Sarah Tahir (https://www.facebook.com/Sarah.Tahir/) come along and make the ladies feel so amazing and special! Sarah is so great at her job, I highly recommend her!

The ladies wore beautiful gowns from https://edenelizabeth.com.au/ and Sew Unique Prop Bowtique which made them feel and look like Goddesses!

Thanks to Brooke and Anissa for making the day an amazing one!

Professional Prints & why you shouldn't settle for "just the digitals"

I wanted to show you this beautiful order I completed for a client this week, and also their review of their experience with me because this is why I love print packages accompanying the digital files. I like to make it an easy process for my clients, so that their photos are printed by professionals, and not just on a USB that is put in the drawer never to see the light of day again. Life gets busy and USB's are forgotten, but with my print packages all the work is done for you and they are ready to proudly show your friends and family :)

"Katrina was so wonderful with our little Bub, so calm and patient throughout the shoot and so accommodating afterwards with the ordering process - Katrina came to our house to walk us through and help us choose the shots and then dropped them off to us when they arrived. The finished photos and albums are stunning, the best I've seen! Absolutely recommend Katrina, not only for her wonderful photography skills but for being so lovely and understanding as well, particularly with new parents who are learning the ropes with a new baby. Thanks so much again"

Mr L - 12 days

Welcome to the world another Canberra newborn Mr L! He technically wasn't due yet at his session, he wasn't due to be born for another 2 days! We had a great session, Mum & Dad loved his photos and I can't wait to get their print order to them!

Miss O ~ 8 days

Last Saturday I had the pleasure of photographing our friends newest addition! When her Mum booked in with me months ago I was so excited to share in this beautiful time with them! The family resemblance is strong in this little one, looking exactly like her brother and sister! Look at that happy smile!

Maternity and Newborn Combined Session!

This glowing Mum-To-Be searched the amazing Search For A Pro section on the AIPP website (www.aipp.com.au) and found me! We did a beautiful Maternity Session, with an absolutely stunning dress from www.edenelizabeth.com.au and followed that up a few short weeks later with an amazing Newborn Session when bub was 9 days old. He was a dream, he slept the whole time and was just so gorgeous! Thank you for choosing me to be such an important part in your families life!

Baby T - 5 days new

Welcome to my blog!

My first newborn scheduled for 2017 turned out to be my last of 2016 when she arrived 2 weeks early! I met Miss T when she was just 5 days old, she rocked her newborn session and looked like a gorgeous little doll. I was thrilled when her Mum booked in as I have known her family for 22 years so to be a part of this precious time in their lives was fantastic!
